WHY TILAPIA

The latest Dietary Guidelines in First World Countries recommends eating at least two servings of a variety of seafood each week to boost heart and brain health and maintain a healthy weight. Among the top most consumed fish, tilapia is the fourth most consumed seafood in the United States.

Although there are many different fish choices that can effortlessly add up to two servings each week, tilapia is definitely under the favourites. The vast majority of tilapia eaten in South Africa today come from farms that adhere to rigorous requirements that take into account food safety, environment and community issues, feed, the use of veterinary drugs, traceability, and more.

Tilapia farms and processing facilities in South Africa are inspected routinely to ensure they meet these requirements and are committed to the health of the fish they raise, the consumers who eat them, and the environment.

ABOUT US

Mayanga Fisheries was established in 2010 by the Davidson Family, and is located east of Pretoria.

Mayanga Fisheries are the new owners and specializes in the production, distribution and sale of tilapia (whole fish), wholesale and retail.

Our Nile tilapia, Mozambique tilapia and Red breast are of the best genetics.

Our fish are bred and cultivated in an intensive RAS (recirculating aquaculture system).

It is our mission and aim to promote sustainable development of tilapia aquaculture, to attract, promote and increase the development of aquaculture industries and supply the demand for protein rich food, high in vitamins and minerals.

Fry/fingerling minimum order:

We don’t have a minimum order if you come collect yourself, but for delivery from our side within a 50km radius, it’s a minimum of 200 fry @ R1 or 100 fingerlings 5 grams @ R2.50 and between and 50km – 100km 500 fry or 250 fingerlings 5 grams, sub-adults and up, is a minimum of 100 fish within a 50km radius and between 50km-100km a minimum of 150 fish.

We do long distance deliveries or large orders, please contact us personally for the logistics.

TRAINING & WORKSHOPS

Thanks for your interest in Tilapia farming training. Mayanga Fisheries offers workshops to new and existing clients. The workshops can be held at the farm in Tierpoort, Pretoria East. I run sessions for students, government departments and farming groups. The workshops cover aspects and practical demonstrations of Tilapia Farming. Wet hands experience is the basis for the workshops as the transfer of skills is vitally important to the farmer.

The cost will be R5500.00 (excl VAT) per person which includes a 10 module manual and a light lunch and refreshments for the 4 days. Your course will include the following activities:

  • Water quality
  • Details on the Tilapia species
  • Working on the farm to see how the systems work
  • Marketing discussion
  • The business side – feed, labour, costs – specific to your set up
  • You will undergo a harvest
  • You will be shown how to install a system if you are interested in purchasing one.
  • You may visit another farm in Gauteng.
